Danube Sofa Journeys
Josef Trattner
For what is now his sixth project in the series that started in 2004, Vienna-based artist Josef Trattner traveled for an entire month along the Danube river, 2,850 km from Germany to the Black Sea — always with his red foam sofa in tow. Trattner’s Sofa Journeys are social experiments that not only bring together various artistic disciplines but also form a comprehensive European communication project.
Alongside visually documentation, the book includes text contribution by 18 authors he has met on his journey. Printed on 100% recycled paper made from water plants, each contribution is laid out on four pages with a fluid typography that changes in size throughout the book. Rainbow printing entails gradual shifts from green to blue from one text section to the next, and further emphasize the notion of flow. The pagination on the side counts down the distance until it reaches the Black Sea, the artist’s final destination.
