Unicorns in a Blueprint
Qiu Zhijie
Departing from Blueprints, an exhibition at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, this small book presents the large-scale ink-based maps by Chinese artist Qiu Zhijie. It offers a reading on four of his works.
Conceived as a hybrid between a pocket atlas and a notebook, the interior pages are printed in black with deep blue as a recurring spot color that is not only featured in the pagination but also in the separation of the images resembling the depth of Chinese ink. The cover is text-free, only a tiny unicorn refers to the title which is taken from one of the artist’s maps. The deep blue continues on the edges of the block that creates a monolithic volume.
Year: 2016
Client: Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam
