, in the break, (Vladimir)
Katarina Zdjelar
Katarina Zdjelar is a visual artist primarily working with moving image, sound, performance and text. , in the break, (Vladimir) was published to accompany Zdjelar’s exhibition at Salzburger Kunstverein in spring 2018. It discusses her latest video and sculptural installations that explore forms of resistance, belonging and solidarity, pointing to the fragile agency of collective action.
Printed on two papers of different material qualities in alternating sections, the design of the book responds to the tangible characteristics of Zdjelar’s work. The gradient on the cover is derived from the patterns used in the costumes and film set of ‘Not a Pillar not a Pile (Dance for Dore Hoyer).’ They were inspired by textile patterns created by women workers of PAUSA textile factory in Germany, who took part in the anti-facist resistance. A version of this gradient is printed on the text pages and is revealed on the fore-edge of the volume. Starting from the cover, a continuous blank strip for the pagination runs horizontally across the text pages and abruptly cuts the text flow, reflecting the artist’s interest in existence that is in a state of transition.
