Lucy Williams
Lucy Williams’ monograph Radiant City celebrates a decade of her practice and includes a foreword by Joseph Becker, Curator of Architecture and Design at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; essays by writers Charlotte Mullins, Salena Barry and Kathryn Lloyd; and an interview by art historian Ben Street. It was launched alongside her exhibition at Berggruen Gallery in San Francisco.
Working with materials such as paper, plexiglas, wood veneer, fabric, piano wire and thread, Williams creates intricate bas-relief collages of modernist architecture and interior spaces, ranging from tiled swimming pools and Brutalist facades to domestic interiors. Radiant City also features her Threaded Collages, abstract geometric works inspired by Bauhaus design and Constructivism.
The design reflects Williams’ process. A muted colour palette, inspired by her hand-painted papers, is paired with a clean, geometric typographic palette using Nguyen Gobber’s Monopol for titles and Lineto’s Riforma for the body text. Different paper stocks distinguish the image and text sections, while semi-translucent tracing paper dividers separate the image sections and reference the early drawings that guide the construction of Williams’ works.
