Marenne Welten
The publication Shakespeare’s Sisters brings together four projects by artist Marenne Welten that have taken shape over the past four years and were separately shown at her galleries: Harkawik (New York and Los Angeles) and tegenboschvanvreden (Amsterdam).
In her paintings, Marenne draws on memories of her youth, her family, and the house where she grew up. She mentally wanders through her parental home and paints its spaces and objects based on the emotion that she experiences while recalling them.
Two newly commissioned texts by Hendrik Driessen and Pietje Tegenbosch appear on narrower pages at the center of the book, alongside images taken in Marenne’s studio. The colour palette of blues and pale greens is drawn from the paintings. The publication cover features details from Marenne’s works, with her name and title playfully integrated using a holographic foil that shifts with the viewing angle. This alludes to memory as something layered and partially hidden.
