The book was published on the occasion of Jimmie Durham’s exhibition Various Items and Complaints at the Serpentine Gallery, London. It presents a survey of Durham’s work, that goes beyond the scope of the exhibition and celebrates his writing practice.
A selection of his essays and poems articulate the artist’s experience and perceptions of living in Europe. Printed on light grey paper stock, they are woven through the whole publication. The use of natural kraft paper for the cover alongside recycled, coated and uncoated paper stock in the interior, as well as a roughly trimmed fore edge are a reference to his material explorations fused with irony.
